This time of year can be busy for everyone involved in education: for the kids, the parents, acedemic staff, and everyone in between. It’s time to get into a new groove after the summer season and jump into that new semester on the right foot. Battling stress at this time of year is a fight you may have to wage on many fronts, and experts and physicians agree that it is always important to focus on physical activity and maintaining satisfactory physical health in the pursuit of positive mental health.

We asked some of our local wellness and fitness experts to suggest a few ways to beat the stress of the season through a wellness routine.

Scott Emmerson, owner of Sandbox Fitness in Oakville, says “People need to metaphorically have the finger on the pulse of their stress and exercise within their boundaries. A harsh, aggressive workout may not necessarily resolve that stress inside us, but when we exercise to rise to the standards we have of ourselves, that’s when we truly see the stress reduction.” Emmerson believes that the back-to-school season is an ideal time to begin an exercise regime and include fitness within your routine. It feels like it is the beginning of a new season, and – once you get into that flow – you can ensure your wellness routine continues all the way into July. In other words, if you get into the groove now it will help alleviate your stress throughout the school year.

Dr. Jacqueline Colello, naturopathic doctor at Nex Wellness in Burlington, says “The body is constantly trying to balance itself, and while acute stress can encourage resilience, chronic stress can be incapacitating.” This is where naturopathic medicine comes into the picture, approaching the effects of stress on the body from a holistic standpoint. In a meeting with a naturopathic doctor, the impacts of stress on health will be discussed – whether it’s more on the physical side or you are experiencing mental and emotional symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will assist you with a variety of patient-centered treatment options to meet individual needs. These can include a combination of clinical nutrition recommendations, nutrient and herbal support, and lifestyle changes. The goal will always be to encourage your body to combat stress, allowing you to feel your best!

Stress Management Tips

Melinda Walker, owner and instructor at 7th Wave Yoga in Burlington, specializes in yoga for those suffering from trauma, grief, and PTSD. She also teaches yoga to teens and children, so dealing with stress is something she encounters often. Walker believes that this time of year can be hectic for both parents and children/teens, due to a number of factors including a change in routine, new schools, new schedules, less sunlight and the change of season. Those that are leaving home and heading to university or college for the first time may be especially at risk. Conforming to a new busy schedule can leave people forgetting to stretch, to get a breath of fresh air, or to take a break and have something nutritious to eat. This can result in the brain suppressing and ignoring the body’s signals, contributing to anxiety and stress.

Luckily, yoga can be used as a tool to help ease the transition. Learning specific breathing exercises can assist with calming when stress rears its head, and it can also help keep you energized when a bout of tiredness hits. Certain yoga poses can help release anxiety, fear and uncertainty from the body so that the feelings don’t keep repeating themselves. “Through specific poses, yoga teaches grounding and centering to help you feel safe and centered in any situation, in any place,” Walker states. “Through the asanas (poses), breathing, and mindfulness exercises, yoga helps you stay connected to your body and its signals, so that you can stay calm and focused, confident and secure.”

Do you have an action plan to alleviate your stress during this hectic season? By incorporating some of these ideas, everyone in your household can head into the new school year with focus, feeling good and with more confidence.

For those of us who love to shop, sorting through racks of clothing to find those perfect pieces is never a chore – it’s a hobby. The thrill of locating your newest must-have item feels the same no matter what store you’re in – including consignment shops. Whether you think of them as thrift, upcycled, second hand or consignment stores, there are many in Oakville and Burlington that sell those high-end brands you love, but at a more affordable price.

The definition of a consignment shop is simple: you bring your unwanted items to the shop and they sell them for you on your behalf – and you can earn a little money too. Think of them as the stylish middleman between your unwanted clothing and the consumer. As a consumer, the list of benefits goes on. At a lower price than what you’d pay for new, it’s easy to update your wardrobe with your favourite brands. Just like any retail store, the selection will vary from season to season, and from day to day, depending on how often new inventory comes in. That’s all the more reason to visit consignment shops frequently to see what’s in stock. The consignment shops in Oakville and Burlington will gladly accept your clothes, handbags and shoes that just sit in your closet because you don’t wear them anymore – with a few conditions.

Most shops request that you make an appointment and bring in your items for inspection. Most consignment shops generally prefer items that are trendy, higher end name brands and designer items  (it’s best to check with each store first). Make sure your items are in ‘new’ condition and dry cleaned or washed and ironed (and on hangers). Also check that each piece has its clothing label, zippers work, buttons are all accounted for and there are no holes, stains or pet hair. Also note that if clothing smells of cigarette smoke, it won’t be accepted.

Consignment Shops

Each shop has its own pricing policy and will select items to sell based on their own customer’s preferences, as well as supply and demand. Usually items will be kept in stock for a designated amount of time (each store may vary), and any unsold pieces will be returned to you (or donated after a certain amount of time if they’re not picked up at the end of the contract). You’ll receive a predetermined percentage for any items that have been sold.

Stores are usually looking for a wide range of brands, such as: Coach, Chanel, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Banana Republic, Diane Von Furstenberg, Elie Tahari, Burberry, BCBG, JCrew, Lululemon, Theory, Tory Burch, Stuart Weitzman, Seven for all Mankind, Olsen, Lida Baday, Marc Cain, Save the Queen, Desigual, Ralph Lauren, Hermes, Prada, Pink Tartan, Dior, and Gucci.

Did we also mention that this is an environmentally friendly way to recycle and feel fashionable? Bringing your items in to sell is rewarding, knowing they’ll be able to call someone else’s closet home – and a bit of extra cash in your pocket never hurts. Shopping consignment is a fun way to build your wardrobe since you never know what you’ll find on the rack. Something just may instantly stand out as your newest must-have.

Meet The Chef, David Neinstein of Barque Smokehouse in Burlington. We sat down with him to ask him about the inspiration about Burlington’s new smokehouse.

Where did you learn to cook?

I started cooking at my father’s knees, literally. He’s a lawyer with a lifelong passion for cooking that began in the Julia Childs/Craig Claiborne years when cooking became accessible, fun and frankly, cool. But he had a day job. From there I grew up entertaining friends and family from the kitchen, slowly taking over from my father. He taught me a lot, but most of all, to be a great host and to put my guests first.

Where do you source your ingredients?

All of our ingredients are sourced as locally as possible for freshness and, as our menu changes regularly, for seasonality. Our pork is collected from select farms in Quebec that create a specific cut of rib just for us. Our beef is from the finest ranches in Alberta and our chicken is delivered fresh three times weekly from an Ontario grower. Vegetables are seasonally purchased and we always buy from the closest farms possible.

What was the inspiration behind Barque?

My partner Jon and I were craving more upscale BBQ. We wanted a glass of wine and fresh vegetables with the classic meats. We love ribs and brisket and desired a balanced and more refined dining experience that was chef driven, never frozen and always fresh.

Why Burlington?

Burlington is a great city of diversity. It’s close to our Roncesvalles location, within reasonable driving distance of both Oakville and Hamilton and has the best reputation in the Golden Horseshoe for being business friendly and boasting a family-oriented community. Besides, we saw that there wasn’t a lot of BBQ around.

Who do you look to for inspiration?

Outwardly, we rely on our travels, eating everywhere from the great BBQ shacks of the world to the Michelin-starred restaurants of Manhattan. Inwardly, we believe in giving people what they’d like and are constantly experimenting with ideas based on our guests’ suggestions and preferences.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu right now?

I am eating our Cajun Smoked Dry Rubbed Wings the most lately. Our Chef Josh suggested the pairing and I’ve loved them ever since.

Meet Rebecca Pointon, Owner of SPINCO Oakville in Downtown Oakville. We sat down with her to find out more about this exciting new local business.

What is SPINCO?

SPINCO is the largest Canadian indoor cycling studio company that spans coast to coast. Our classes are 50 minutes long, combining cardio, loud music, and fun for an intense full body workout within a state of the art facility – including custom bikes, comfortable spin shoes, spotless space, paired with exceptional customer service!

Our mantra is “One Team, One Bike” which signifies the importance of community. Our team and riders are considered family and you get a sense of that as soon as you walk through our doors.  The studio is a place where everyone is welcome no matter what your fitness level is.

Spinco Oakville

What attracted you to the SPINCO brand?

I fell in love with SPINCO not only for how amazing the workout was, but also because it was unlike any other studio out there. Going to SPINCO became a non-negotiable part of my day due to the empowering and uplifting atmosphere it provided. In opening SPINCO Oakville, we have been able to share this feeling with this amazing community and we are so grateful for that opportunity to be a positive part of someone’s day.

Why Downtown Oakville?

We chose to introduce SPINCO to Oakville because of the people, and specifically Downtown Oakville since it is at the core of the community. The people are athletically-minded, family-oriented, and all about community, which is one of our core values.

What sets SPINCO apart from traditional spin classes?

At SPINCO, we believe in the ‘beats high, lights low’ mentality which is different than the traditional style of spin you may find at a local gym. Our classes are designed to keep our riders engaged from start to finish, challenging them to work hard and find that strength from within. It’s a really powerful feeling that our riders take with them long after class has finished.

If you’re going to invest money, time and considerable effort into upgrading and renovating your home, the experts agree that kitchens and bathrooms are where that effort matters most. Our bathrooms are our sanctuaries, our quiet places, a space to invite reflection and relaxation, and, for some of us, the only room in the house with a locking door that clearly means Stay Out and Leave Me Alone.

Bathrooms are also high-traffic areas in any dwelling, whether you live quietly alone, with a partner, or with an exuberant family of five or more. Bathrooms are well-used by you and your guests and can make a big impression, even if only for a brief visit. They can be warm and welcoming or more cool and clinical, but when it comes to design, fixtures and colours, the possibilities are endless. And the current trends are lots of fun to explore.

Bathroom Trends

Matte black finishes on faucets are definitely popular right now, according to Robin Cestra of Oakville Kitchen & Bath Centre, along with black accents on frameless glass shower enclosures. “Black is a trendy colour,” she says, “along with burnished brass. It’s lower maintenance than highly polished hardware and easier to keep looking clean.”

Cestra also says graphic tiles are a great investment, whether on floors or walls. “Tile is coming on strong, even used floor to ceiling,” she says. “We’re also seeing lots of different sizes and shapes mixed together as well.”

His and Hers Showers are also popular, featuring large walk-in spaces with individual screens and controls, for couples who truly can’t stand to spend a moment apart. Or, who can’t stop fighting over who gets to shower first in the morning.

Cestra says while most homeowners come in with ideas of what they want, they’re happy to take advice as well, which is where the designers and store owners come in handy with a wealth of knowledge and years of experience.

“We see a high volume of clients who come in looking for clean and contemporary lines for the design of their bathroom,” says Angela Hansen, designer at Opal Baths & Design in Burlington. “To soften the look we build on a neutral base and add accent colours and textures for character.”

The bathroom plays a vital role in daily comfort and function, so if that room is outdated or feeling cramped, redesigning and revamping may be the best way to a bigger and brighter future. Whether you’re looking for increased function or just a more aesthetically pleasing look, Hansen has some great suggestions for taking it all to the next level.

“Textured tiles that mimic wood or organic shapes and cultured marbles are still very popular and create an impact in any space,” she says. “And matte black and gold fixtures are also very trendy and are a great way to make a statement no matter what the size of your bathroom.”

Gold is definitely making a bold appearance right now, but picking the right shade is important, and you should use it sparingly throughout.  A gentler, softer shade is always better, and spreading it around the room as a highlight will go a long way to catching the eye and making a splash.

While there are quite a few exciting design trends for luxury bathrooms in 2018, Annie Callan of Burlington’s Bathrooms2Go lists large format tile, especially for shower stalls, near the top of the list. “Large format tiles create a ‘Grand Space’ even in the smallest bathrooms,” she says. “They can emphasize high ceilings and even create the illusion of them. Regardless of the pattern, colour, or finish they take the space to the next level.”

She also says bold patterns such as Marrakech or multi-colour hexagons make a great statement on a feature wall or floor. “These add a beautiful artistic aspect to the design.”

But of course, while embracing trends is fun and exciting, making sure that the style fits you personally and what you want and need should always come first and foremost when designing — or redesigning — any room in your house. With the help of local experts, you can be confident you will end up with something just right for you.

Ever had a dream that you’re falling and then you suddenly wake up with a start? Indoor skydiving lets you experience the thrill of free falling for real without ever having to board a plane – or dream about it.

Officially known as bodyflight, it’s a sport that’s really taken off over the last few years. No longer are intrepid (or timid) adventurers required to jump out of a plane in order to give it a try; modern wind tunnels mimic the same effect. Even kids as young as four years old can give it a try.

You can experience all of this at iFly Toronto’s facility in Oakville, which is open seven days a week. Allow at least two and a half hours for the whole activity. You’ll receive in-class training with an instructor, all the necessary equipment, an observation period, flight time and a review session with the instructor afterwards. The more you do it the better you’ll get; in fact, bodyflight is a very competitive sport. The experience of floating and learning how to control the body in the air is what keeps people coming back for more.

Indoor Skydiving

It’s a great experience alone, with friends, for a party or as a corporate activity. iFly also offers a kid’s club. Young divers from ages six to 14 gather once a week to practice, develop sportsmanship skills and work as a team. Bodyflight academy courses are also offered to adults. You can pursue certification in Wind Tunnel Training.

The physical and mental benefits are many. It helps strengthen your muscles, especially your core. During the free fall experience, your brain releases serotonin and dopamine. Serotonin promotes focus and better sleep and dopamine is responsible for feelings of happiness and contentment. Being able to check indoor skydiving off on your bucket list can also grant you a feeling of accomplishment!

Indoor Skydiving

Are you still on the fence about free falling in a contained environment? If you need some more convincing, consider the following. It’s safe – likely the safest ‘extreme’ sport out there. You don’t actually fall or climb into a rickety plane and await your ascent. Even if you’ve never done it before the instructors are there to help guide you from start to finish.  It’s not as expensive as you may think. Two flights per person cost about $72, and you can often find a promotion on the iFly website for $106 which earns you four flights. There’s no need to schedule around the weather. You’ll be safe and dry (albeit windblown).  It’s a perfect family activity.  Surprise the kids over the summer with an experience they’ll never forget.

Once the wind tunnel fires on and you swirl into its contained abyss, you can ever so slightly rest assured that you won’t have to worry about needing an expertly packed parachute. And, you’ll want to document your time in the air, and the faces the wind creates as it molds your skin into funny expressions.

Indoor Skydiving

Tips for going indoor skydiving

1.  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. You’ll want to be able to move freely and manipulate your body in the air.

2.  If you have long hair, it’s recommended that you braid it – and bring a brush for afterwards!

3.  Always listen to your instructor. They are certified professionals and can offer tips and guidance for any level of diver.

4.  A stable arched position is ideal. Your instructor will show you how to pose to properly stay afloat.

5.  Stay calm and free fall on. It’s a safe, contained environment.

6.  Breathe through your nose and keep your mouth closed. You’ll be able to see clearly because you’ll be wearing safety goggles.

7.  Smile, have fun and look into getting a photo or video of your experience.

Indoor Skydiving

Whether you’re an avid cyclist out on the roads several times a week, or you like to dust off your bike every so often for a leisurely ride along the trails, there’s an event this summer that appeals to riders of all ages and abilities. Le Tour De Norfolk is an opportunity to see the sights on a leisurely route through one of Ontario’s most picturesque regions.

Belgians who immigrated to Norfolk in the 1940s and 50s brought with them their love of cycling, and the area has become known as a cyclist’s paradise. The terrain is mostly flat, and can be traveled with ease and you’ll probably come across more farm animals than traffic on the back roads, possibly going for several kilometres without seeing a car. The trees along the roads offer shade and you may even pass by a farmer irrigating his fields so you can take advantage of the misty air.

Speaking of farmers, the area is rich in agriculture with apple and cherry orchards and fields of asparagus, blueberries, cabbage, cucumbers, ginseng, lavender, onions, peanuts, peppers, potatoes, pumpkins, squash, sweet corn, sweet potatoes, tobacco, tomatoes, raspberries, rye, strawberries and zucchini. If you’ve got a basket or saddlebags on your bike, you may want to stop at a roadside stand and stock up on some fresh produce.

The Tour de Norfolk route begins and ends at the Delhi Community Centre and there are a variety of route lengths to choose from: 40, 75, 100 or 160 kms and you can ‘rest’ assured that there are break areas every 20 – 25 kms with snacks and refreshments. Routes are clearly marked with painted arrows on the road and maps are also available (to be posted on the event website in early July). Children under the age of 12 are also welcome.

Tour de Norfolk

Stay & Play

If you have time to explore the area on an extended weekend stay, the beaches can’t be beat. Along Lake Erie, you’ll find Port Dover Beach, Turkey Point Beach and Long Point Beach. If it’s food, wine or beer you’re after, there are plenty of choices. From drive-ins and brew houses to lavender farms with on-site wineries, you won’t go hungry or thirsty. Charlotteville Brewing is the newest craft brewery on the scene. Try their local 519 India Pale Ale or the Velvet Devil.

New Cycling Route Added

A new cycling route was just launched in June: the Attawandaron Cycling Route is 100 kms long and starts and ends in the town of Port Rowan. The Attawandaron indigenous people lived along the shore of Lake Erie between 1500-1600. Their name translates to ‘people of a slightly different language’. They were known as the Neutral Nation. Take the trail at your leisure, and if you wish, stop at Bird Studies Canada and the Long Point Waterfowl display area before heading out along scenic marshland.

Tour de Norfolk

Where to Stay

Scenic countryside and beaches call for accommodation in B&Bs and quaint inns, and there are lots here. If you prefer to bed down in a B&B, look into the Cedar Cottage, Palm Trees and Polar Bears, Dover House, or R & F Alpacas (yes, visits with the alpacas are included). The Elmhurst Inn & Spa is also nearby, offering luxurious suites, sprawling grounds and a restaurant serving locally inspired cuisine.

By the end of the tour, you may be ‘moved’ to cycle more often. With the number of trails and routes available you could be blazing through Norfolk County all summer – and fall.
