As part of the kick-off to Bike Month 2019, the Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA) is proud to announce its Ontario By Bike (OBB) Business Area certification. “We are honoured to join six other municipalities in Ontario that have earned this important certification,” states Brian Dean, Executive Director of the BDBA. “As more people choose alternative transportation to explore the best of Burlington, our small business community has taken extra steps to offer amenities and services that are specific to the needs of residential and visiting cyclists.” Dean goes on to say, “We have worked closely with a select number of downtown businesses who have helped us achieve this certification, and we look forward to growing the list of downtown businesses participating in the Ontario By Bike program in the coming months.”

One of the BDBA’s community partners that helped the Association achieve its certification is Tourism Burlington. “Tourism Burlington is thrilled that the BDBA has received an Ontario by Bike cycle friendly designation and we are pleased to be designated as the official Bike Welcome Centre! At our downtown visitor information centre, we greet and provide information and support to numerous cycle tourists annually. These visitors will now have more cycle-friendly shops, restaurants, and accommodations to visit in our beautiful city,” remarks Pam Belgrade, Executive Director, Tourism Burlington.

Other downtown Burlington businesses who have achieved their OBB bike-friendly certification include: The Art Gallery of Burlington, Emma’s Back Porch, Lola Choco Bar & Sweet House, Lettuce Love Café and The Waterfront Hotel.

“Downtown Burlington is well located and has an attractive mix of businesses to welcome the increasing number of cyclists on day trips or longer overnight rides, whether it be on along the Waterfront Trail, road routes throughout Halton Region and Hamilton or enjoying city bike lanes and trails,” said Louisa Mursell, Executive Director, Ontario By Bike / Transportation Options.

The Burlington Downtown Business Association is a not-for-profit organization representing over 430 commercial property owners and businesses within the Business Improvement Area.

If you have never lawn bowled it is well worth trying.  It’s a bit like curling, but without as much shouting, and of course, warmer as it is played in the summer on grass and not ice. And there’s no sweeping!
Bowls are biased, or weighted by dimension one side, to create a curve at the end of the roll along the green. Allowing for that curve, which is affected by speed and weight, makes the game interesting and challenging.
Most games, especially when played by a novice, are relaxed and known as “casuals”.  Teams are assigned with whoever turns up to play. And more experienced players will help new members to learn the game. With more experience, competitive games can be played.  There are ladies’ mornings, mens nights, Aussie bowls, pairs leagues and a junior program held on Sundays for 7 years of age and up. This is just to name a few of the activities available.
The club holds open houses each year to encourage new members.

This year they are:

Saturday May 11th 2019 from 1:30 – 3:30pm
Sunday May 12th 2019 from 1:30 -3:30pm
Saturday May 18th 11:00am – 1:00pm
Sunday May 19th 12:00 – 2:00pm

People can come to the club on the above dates and find out about the club and give bowling a try at no charge.  The club offers an introductory week of free lessons from May 13th – 18th.  Bowls are provided in a variety of colours and sizes and these bowls are available to use free of charge for the first year of membership. So, the only equipment needed is a flat pair of shoes (so the grass is not damaged).  The cost of membership is $170 for the year May – October (weather permitting).
The Oakville Club has been around since 1908 and it is no wonder that it is in one of the most attractive spots in Old Oakville.

If you miss the Open Houses in May, please visit www.oakvillelawnbowling.ca to learn more.
