As this unique situation unfolds and our economy grinds to a halt, many of us will undoubtedly be impacted, both financially and emotionally. Although we live in two of the best cities in Canada the World, there are many residents of Oakville and Burlington who will need a little extra support during this trying time. If you have the capacity to help, there has never been a greater need than now. That help can come in many forms, and doesn’t necessarily have to be financial in nature. We’ve put together some ideas below to help your fellow neighbours.

Support local business

Our local businesses are the fabric that help shape our community. For many residents, the reason they move to cities like Oakville and Burlington is because of the vibrant local economy. It’s already tough to be an entrepreneur, but an event like this can be devastating. There are many ways that we can support these small businesses.

Please Consider:

  • Shopping locally online.
  • Ordering take-out/delivery from local restaurants.
  • Ordering baked goods, grocery, and personal items from local pharmacies, grocery stores, and bakeries.
  • Rescheduling appointments instead of cancelling.
  • Purchasing gift cards for future use – they’ll receive the revenue now while foot traffic is down, and you’ll have something to look forward to!
  • Check in with local retailers to see how you can support them.
  • Share, tweet, post about your favourite small business – let’s spread some positivity!

Call a senior – or draw them a picture

By now we’ve all heard horror stories about Covid-19 spreading through retirement homes in certain parts of the world. To help control the spread of the virus here, seniors are no longer able to receive visitors. This has exasperated what can be an already isolating environment, and in all likelihood a senior would love to hear from you. So make their day a little brighter and give them a call – or have your kids draw them a picture.

Donate goods and funds

The Food Bank is going to experience a huge spike in demand over the next few months, even in communities like Oakville and Burlington. Self-isolating obviously complicates the act of donating – but it’s still doable, and so important at a time like this. Follow the instructions on the Oakville Food Bank or the Burlington Food Bank page for more info on how to donate.

Deliver groceries and medicine

If you know someone who needs help getting groceries or picking up a prescription, now is the time to lend a hand. Something as simple as going to the grocery store could mean standing in line for 30 minutes – and for many residents that is a task too daunting.

Donate blood

Our blood banks could use your support. If you don’t have any symptoms, consider donating blood at your local blood bank. Visit this site for more information.

Stay informed

There is a lot of information swirling around and it can be overwhelming at times. We recommend checking the news only once or twice a day and staying up to date on current best practices. This will pass, and we will all get through this together. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook and help spread the positivity! #supportlocal #allinthistogether

Church-sponsored event benefits community mainstay that ensures seniors and other Oakville residents who need assistance receive nourishing meals and wellness checks – giving caregivers peace of mind

Oakville Meals on Wheels, an organization providing healthy meals and social connections for the Oakville community, is pleased to announce the receipt of $15,000 from the St. Andrew’s Christmas House Tour, a bi-annual church-sponsored event that benefits local charities. The generous donation will fuel the efforts of Oakville Meals on Wheels, which has been providing nutritious meals to seniors and other residents of Oakville needing assistance since 1976.

“We are so grateful for the financial support from St. Andrew’s Church and its festive Christmas House Tour,” said Oakville Meals on Wheels Board Chair Bob Griesbach. “As we continue this journey into a new decade, we are appreciative of the organizations and individuals who care deeply about our organization and community. This donation from St. Andrew’s Christmas House Tour is a huge step in helping us move closer to our goal of raising $100,000—and beyond—which will ensure that those who wish to continue living independently in their own homes have access to our invaluable services. I would like to extend sincere thanks to our former long-time board member, Lyn Wilson, for her collaborative role in bringing Oakville Meals on Wheels Meals into the group of beneficiaries of this amazing community event.”

Oakville is renowned for its charm—a suburban town on the north shore of Lake Ontario with a small-town feel—and has been rated as one of the top five places to live in Canada. In its 40th year, the St. Andrew’s Christmas House Tour is part of the town’s long-standing tradition. The tour presents an interesting mix of architecturally unique homes, each decorated for the Christmas season by talented local designers, with a large portion of tour proceeds going toward organizations like Oakville Meals on Wheels that are making a difference in the community.

“Over nearly four decades, we have been fortunate to have so many of Oakville’s residents open their homes for our annual Christmas House Tour so that we can raise much-needed funds for Oakville’s community organizations,” said Frances Mantle, co-chair of St. Andrew’s Christmas House Tour. “We are pleased to have raised $15,000 for Oakville Meals on Wheels given its long-standing commitment to serving so many of our local residents by not only making sure they have a fresh, hot meal personally delivered to them but also ensuring that these Oakville residents are able to maintain important social connections.”

Since its founding, Oakville Meals on Wheels has grown into a community mainstay delivering fresh, nutritious, and delicious mid-day meals to adults of all ages and from all walks of life who struggle to meet a basic human need. In four decades of operation, Oakville Meals on Wheels has delivered more than 934,000 fresh and locally prepared lunches and important well-being checks that give families and caregivers peace of mind. Serving as a critical touch-point, its volunteers—the organization’s driving force—never leave a door unanswered and follow up if there are any concerns, whether it is a resident’s thermostat that isn’t working in the cold of winter or alerting family that their loved one’s health is deteriorating.

In its 43 years of operation, Oakville Meals on Wheels and its team of volunteers have delivered more than 934,000 meals to residents. A United Way-supported agency, Oakville Meals on Wheels – which serves more than 300 individuals and delivers approximately 2,100 meals per month – also provides its clients with the positive benefits of social contact, security and increased independence.

Canada’s largest design exposition and conference, the Interior Design Show (IDS20), returns to Toronto with a future-forward vision for 2020. IDS20/20 will bring together global minds, leading designers, makers, changers, shapers and dreamers of today who are creating the new worlds of tomorrow.

Canada’s premier showcase of new products, furniture, superstar designers and avant-garde concepts became a hybrid event last year, catering to trade construction, design professionals and design-savvy consumers. IDS20 takes place January 16-19, 2020 at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

“For over 20 years, IDS has been both a catalyst and authority for Canadian design,” says Karen Kang, National Director, IDS Canada. “During the past two decades, we have witnessed a lot of change. Yesterday’s designer has become today’s problem solver and tomorrow’s visionary. This year’s IDS 20/20 theme will explore how designers now create experiences at the intersection of technological and social problems, imagining new roads to alternative realities.”

IDS 2020

IDS Contract

In 2019, IDS expanded to include IDS Contract, a hyper-curated B2B trade-only exposition and conference focused on all verticals of design including: workplace, healthcare, retail, hospitality, education, public spaces, government and more.

IDS Contract Trade Days will continue in 2020 on Thursday and Friday. New this year, Trade Day attendees will also benefit from full access to the IDS Main exhibit hall.

IDS Contract brings an additional 100+ exhibitors and several new feature areas aimed at B2B trade professionals. Along with IDS Contract is IDS Conference, a series of 65+ sessions including keynote speakers, fireside chats, seminars and workshops. The 2020 installment will explore the business of design, the future of work, the future of living and technology.

RESET HOME: Design for the Senses

This year’s IDS Concept Home is a multisensory experience of the future of living and an exploration of the role that our homes can play in improving our overall wellbeing. Blending theories of spatial perception and human wellness, Hummingbird Hill Homes, VFA Architecture + Design and Victoria Taylor Landscape Architect bring you the RESET Home; a space that transcends contemporary design to reset the way we perceive, interpret, experience and thrive within our living habitats. The fully realized space will allow IDS20 guests to walk through the home and explore how materials, textures, sounds, scents and light affect the five senses, mind and body, impacting the way we live and interact within the private sanctuary of our home.

Keynote Conference Speakers

 Frida Escobedo

Joining IDS20 as a keynote conference speaker for the Dezeen Trade Talks on Thursday, January 16th is Mexican architect and designer, Frida Escobedo. Principal and founder of her studio based in Mexico City, Escobedo is known for her interesting use of materials. Her work focuses largely on the reactivation of urban spaces that are considered to be residual or forgotten, through projects that range from housing and community centers, hotels, galleries and public art installations. The intention to provide possibilities for growth and flexibility can be read as much in large scale social housing projects, such as those developed for INFONAVIT, as in more modest interventions like Casa Cruz Castillo or Casa Negra. In addition to her practice, Escobedo has taught at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and during spring 2019 was a visiting professor at RICE University. She is currently teaching at Harvard Graduate School of Design. She is the recipient of the 2016 Architectural Review Emerging Architecture Award, the 2017 Architectural League Emerging Voices Award, and in 2018 was the youngest architect to design the 18th Serpentine Summer Pavilion in London.

Francis Kéré

IDS20 is pleased to be hosting internationally acclaimed architect Francis Kéré as a keynote conference speaker for the AZURE Trade Talks on Friday, January 17th. Kéré has garnered critical praise from the beginning of his architectural practice when awarded the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture (2004) for his first ever building – a primary school he designed, raised the funds for and realised in collaboration with the residents of his native Gando, Burkina Faso. Kéré is regarded as one of the most distinguished contemporary architects thanks to his pioneering of a communal approach to design and his commitment to sustainable materials and modes of construction. He has gathered a diverse, agile team at his Berlin-based Kéré Architecture offices, to take on projects across four continents. Most prominently these include his design for the Burkina Faso National Assembly, the Léo Surgical Clinic & Health Centre (2014), the Lycée Schorge Secondary School (2016), the Serpentine Pavilion (2017) and Xylem (2019), a gathering pavilion for the Tippet Rise Art Center.

There’s a feeling of joy that comes when you step into Familia Fine Foods. From the warm smile Juliana Berrio flashes when you walk through the door to the rustic décor and Columbian charm, the space alights your senses. It all seems so organic – the welcome, the food, the atmosphere – and that’s because owners Luis Velasquez and Juliana Berrio inject their culture and love of family into every aspect of their home away from home.

When Luis and Juliana were working long hours in the corporate world, they had an epiphany – that life is short and doing something fulfilling is more important. So, in 2014 they walked away from their careers in finance and not-for-profit work to start Familia Fine Foods, and it was the best decision they ever made.

The restaurant’s foundation was built on their love of family and their love of food. With two young daughters themselves, Juliana and Luis understand the convenience of having a wholesome, homemade, ready-to-eat meal on your table. Giving families priceless time to make memories with their kids. But it’s not just families that love Familia. Weekday lunch draws a crowd. From a regular tennis group with a weekly reservation to entrepreneurs grabbing a fresh bite to eat – you’ll find all walks of life indulging in Familia’s classic Latin menu…with a twist.

While Juliana runs the front of the house and manages catering orders, her husband, Luis, is behind the counter preparing favourites – and everything is made fresh in house.

Our meal began with their in-house iced tea, made with natural cane sugar. It was subtle and refreshing and the perfect pairing to the meal. We immediately dug into our tacos – a special every Tuesday. The taco shell was soft and fresh, adorned with chicken, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream, and feta cheese. This symphony of flavours worked flawlessly together and satisfied our pallets on every level.

Next, we had a sampling of desserts. Three generous portions were presented across a wood plank, begging us to dig in. First was the passionfruit cheesecake –  an exotic, lighter touch to a traditional cheesecake. Smooth and creamy, tropical and fragrant – it’s clear that passionfruit and cheesecake were always meant to be together.  From the cheesecake, our forks were pulled towards the bread and guava cake. Light, moist and packed with guava, this cake paired beautifully with coffee.  Last was the poster tres leches, a king among them all. Drenched in milk this delicate sponge cake manages to soak up tons of liquid while remaining solid enough for you to dig into its crumb with a fork. Fluffy and delicious, it certainly lived up to its expectations.

Even with full bellies, we couldn’t resist exploring their fridge full of take-home meals, grabbing some items to go – bringing the taste of Familia home.

At Familia Fine Foods homemade with love is their motto – and when walk you walk into Familia Fine Foods, homemade with love is what you get.
