Sunset Kino is Canada’s only outdoor, avant-garde film festival. Founded by Séamus Kealy in Austria in 2017, this festival continues at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens. Introduced by the programmers and commencing at sunset, audiences experience a curated program of films and videos by Canadian and international artists.

Every year the program is guided by an overall theme and programmed also in relation to the summer exhibition. Parallel to Sunset Kino is our Summer Exhibition, Ilya & Emilia Kabakov: Between Heaven and Earth and the commissioned public art installation, The Ship of Tolerance, a collaboration between the artists and the children of Canada.

This year’s Sunset Kino theme is “What Was That.” This phrase is not conveyed as a question necessarily, rather as a statement that underlines something confounding. This could be the idea of a portrait under pressure, which is thus distorted or inaccurate or conflated with a different idea. This could also be a notion of where we are going collectively once a sea change has happened. The idea of “who will I be” now that a challenging event has happened is also hinted at, as indeed is the mind’s processing of what has just happened. As avant-garde cinema, the theme also self-consciously foreshadows an imaginary audience’s potential response to what they just saw (when the lights come up and one is not sure what just happened). As with all of Sunset Kino’s programming, this theme of “What Was That” also connects to larger geopolitical shifts and resulting narratives whether expressed across borders or locally. Ultimately Sunset Kino this year asks us to ponder how we are constantly needing to shift our perception of the world, and perhaps also our role as individuals and collective society
as a new global order becomes more palpable.

Each Sunset Kino evening, artist Faisal Anwar presents tailored projection performances ahead of the curated program.

Altogether this set of programs, exhibitions, and installations is the most ambitious project by Oakville Galleries to date. The Ship of Tolerance is presented in collaboration with the Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Foundation, as well as with The National Gallery of Canada. The National Gallery of Canada’s National Engagement initiative is generously supported by Michael Nesbitt, with additional funding from the National Gallery of Canada Foundation.

The businesses of the Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA) invite you to celebrate the return of patio season in Downtown Burlington!

From now through October 31st, participating restaurants are encouraged to activate their patios by extending into adjacent sidewalks and roadways, offering residents and visitors a vibrant, memorable outdoor dining experience all summer long.

The BDBA is proud to support outdoor dining and continues to champion creative, community- focused uses of public spaces. This year, the organization is once again funding pedestrian bypasses: temporary sidewalk extensions that allow for expanded patios while maintaining walkability.

Each bypass is beautifully enhanced with planter boxes, bringing the charm of seasonal blooms to street level and contributing to the lively downtown atmosphere.

Speaking to the “vibrant atmosphere” it creates for residents and visitors alike, Chair of the BDBA Board of Directors, Liza Buchard-Bain, expressed, “Burlington’s downtown is once again coming alive, with patios opening up and people gathering to enjoy the cherished, albeit short, summer season.”

She continued, “The arrival of patio season is always a highlight for our community, as it transforms our downtown into a lively hub of activity. Restaurants and cafes spill onto the sidewalks, creating inviting spaces where friends and families can gather to share meals, laughter, and good times!”

Ward 2 Councillor Lisa Kearns added, “The annual patio program is more than just a seasonal initiative: it’s a vital economic driver for our downtown restaurants and businesses. It creates a welcoming atmosphere that fosters connection, supports local commerce, and showcases Burlington as a destination for everyone to enjoy.”

Thank you to our 2025 patio program sponsors: Perspective Vision, Pure Boutique, Stoner & Company, Family Law, The Kuchma Team, and Mallord Farms, for their generous support in helping us bring the vibrancy of patio season to life.

The BDBA is a Local Board of the City of Burlington responsible for the vitalization and promotion of our vibrant Downtown business community.

The BDBA promotes our dense commercial area as a vibrant business and shopping district. Through the use of promotional activities such as special events, advertising, and beautification programs, we aim to keep the area foremost in the public’s mind as an attractive, pleasant place to shop, to be entertained, to work, and to live. We want to make the quality of life for our Downtown businesses and services better.

Our efforts are dedicated to ensuring a healthy economic environment for our community and making our Downtown a better place to shop, dine, live, work, invest, visit, and play!

The Burlington Downtown Business Association (BDBA) is excited to announce its new, compassiondriven, education-based initiative that we believe will help build a more equitable and inclusive community.

We call it The Green Lanyard Project. The Green Lanyard Project aims to foster and nurture a community where every individual—regardless of their background, identity, characteristics, or abilities—feels safe, respected, included, and empowered to thrive. Equity, accessibility, and belonging are not just values; they are the foundation of collective strength and resilience.

Developed in partnership with Stefanie Peachey, Peachey Counselling and Family Support, this newly launched program works by issuing a green lanyard to patrons & visitors of our downtown, free of charge. The use of this lanyard signals to our business members that the wearer of the lanyard (or a member of their party) has an invisible atypical ability.

These invisible, atypical abilities often go unnoticed, making it difficult for frontline staff to understand the unique challenges that individuals face. The Green Lanyard serves as a visual cue to help small business owners, and their staff approach each interaction with the wearer with empathy, openness, and a willingness to assist.

This lanyard signals to others that the wearer may need more time, more patience and more understanding as they navigate an environment, such as a retail store, restaurant or even a bank.

“My son Andrew was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) at the age of 8. His diagnosis came as both a relief, to finally understand how to better help him navigate his day-to-day life, and it also came with challenges. I became overly aware of the daily obstacles that neurodivergent individuals must face when taking part in everyday activities. From lights and sounds to what it’s like to conversate, everyone feels things differently, and everyone deserves the opportunity to feel heard. The Green Lanyard Project is designed so that people can feel heard, and seen, without having to explain themselves, a luxury that neurotypical individuals rarely must question.” Alison Policicchio, Marketing Director at BDBA. She continues “It is our hope that this one small step opens the door to a more inclusive, engaged and welcoming community.”

The Green Lanyard Project will require ongoing education for our downtown small businesses, residents, and visitors in Burlington. We will accomplish this through a series of community and public education pieces that will be disseminated in-person and be made available online.

Our commitment to this program, along with the support we have received from our small businesses, clearly demonstrates that our BIA is working to make our community more accessible, inclusive, and comfortable for those in need.

The excellent service you’re used to receiving from our small businesses won’t change, it’s just going be even better … we’re just adding a touch of green!

Residents and visitors to Burlington Downtown will be able to submit a request for a lanyard free of charge, which will then be mailed to them for use at their discretion. Then, the user can wear their lanyard when exploring our vibrant small business community.

Ready to learn more about the program? Ready to grab your lanyard? Click here to request your green lanyard, and add the subject line “Green Lanyard” and our project lead will connect with you directly. Lanyards will take 7 to 10 business days from day of request to arrival.

By Lisa Evans

Convincing a teenager to leave their room, let alone step out the house, is no easy feat. But lucky for us, our community is packed with summer activities that actually appeal to teens (aka not boring or “basic” as the kids say). Whether your teen is a thrill-seeker, water-lover, fashion-hunter, or just wants somewhere cool to chill with friends, here are seven teen-approved outings that might even earn you a high five—or at least a subtle nod of appreciation.

1. Movie Magic At Starlite and Five Drive-In Theatres

Movies might be meh, but a movie under the stars with your besties? Next level. Georgia Ross (17) enjoys going to the drive-in with her friends and says the best part is the retro atmosphere. “I love getting cozy under a blanket on a lawn chair or in the trunk of the car, eating popcorn, and watching our favourite new movies until we fall asleep,” she says. “It’s a summer activity I always look forward to as the weather gets warmer.”

2. Jetskiing & Paddleboarding

Want to earn a “cool parent” badge this summer? Rent a jet ski (16+ and boating licence required), a kayak or a paddleboard and head to the lake. Teens will love the freedom of cruising across the water or mastering their balance while soaking in the summer sun. Make a day of it and pack a picnic for the beach.

3. Activate Burlington—The Real-Life Video Game

Imagine if your teen’s favourite video game suddenly required running, jumping, and teamwork. That’s Activate. It’s like stepping into a video game where physical activity and puzzle-solving meet. There are timed challenges so it’s perfect for competitive teens. Plus it gets them moving without protests of, “Ugh, exercise.”

4. Escape Rooms

If your teen loves mystery and strategy, escape rooms hit the mark. Milton’s Mission Possible Escape and other nearby spots offer themed adventures—from haunted cabins to secret spy missions. It’s great for friend groups or families who want to test their communication (and patience) in hilarious ways.

5. Glow-in-the-Dark Mini Golf

Classic mini golf gets a neon upgrade at Putt In Glow in Oakville. Jacob Borg (17) says, “Mini golf outdoors is fun, but playing a round of (indoor) glow-in- the-dark mini golf with the glowing colours and the music… it’s just a cool vibe. It’s something my friends and I like to do in the summer when it’s really hot outside.”

6. Thrifting For Local & Vintage Finds

Let your fashion-forward teen spend the afternoon digging for treasures at local thrift stores. It’s a great way to hunt for unique clothes, express their personal style, and stay budget-conscious. For teens who love ‘90s or Y2K looks, thrift shops are gold mines.

7. Paintball – Let Them Battle It Out (Safely!)

Looking to burn off some energy? Paintball Burlington is the perfect combo of strategy, adrenaline, and team-building. Full gear is provided, and safety is top priority, so parents can relax while teens duck, dive, and maybe get splatted by a well-aimed shot from a friend. Is it TikTok Approved? Maybe. Teen-Approved? Definitely.

At the end of the day, teens don’t need “epic” plans to be happy this summer. What they do want is a bit of freedom, a splash of excitement, and activities that feel made just for them. So go ahead and plan that outing. You might even hear the words, “That was actually fun.”

Outside is my happy place, especially when I’m chilling on a patio with friends, soaking up the sunshine, and sipping a glass of wine. And as the sun sets, dining under twinkling stars is undeniably romantic.

Summer in Ontario is brief, so let’s make the most of the season by dining al fresco. Below is a tour of some of my favourite Oakville and Burlington patios. Of course, these are just a few of my personal choices. Depending on your style and preferences, you can choose glittering waterfront views, outstanding culinary experiences for foodies, party patios… we have it all!

Isabelle Restaurant and Lounge at The Pearle Hotel (Burlington)

Boasting spectacular views of Lake Ontario, Burlington’s largest lakeside patio is perfect for a romantic interlude or a girls’ night out. Top off the experience with a Spicy Cucumber Margarita, Sicilian Manhattan or Isabelle cocktail.

This casual, family-friendly restaurant indulges seafood lovers with dishes such as fish and chips, oysters, seafood pot, and a fresh raw and sushi bar. If seafood isn’t your jam try one of their popular Detroit-style deep dish pizzas, a burger, or beef striploin.

Kerr Street Café (Oakville)

Kerr Street Café serves classics like pancakes, French toast, huevos rancheros, Turkish eggs, the famous Kerr Street breakfast— and mimosas! Their food is created from locally sourced ingredients. A retail marketplace provides dinner options to take home, and they have a tasteful patio right on Kerr Street.

The King’s Arms (Oakville)

This is not your grandpa’s British pub, and neither is its private courtyard patio. All dishes are created fresh and in-house, with many small plates and sharing
options. The menu includes mussels, sliders, nachos, wings and wagyu burgers. Expect a plethora of reasonably priced local craft and draught beers, as well as cocktails and mocktails. After all, sitting in the sun does make us thirsty!

BY CYNDI INGLE

Even with sunnier days and flowers in full bloom, summer doesn’t quite manage to fix what’s broken in society. Right here at home people are facing food insecurity, grappling with mental health issues, or falling through the cracks of social support networks.

Even thriving cities have pockets of great need. Oakville – which a CBC reporter called “the richest little city in Canada” in the late 1970s and maintains a reputation for affluent neighbourhoods – has the highest propensity of poverty in the Halton region. Ten percent of the town’s population, or 20,000 individuals, live below poverty level.

Kerr Street Mission (“KSM”) supports children, families and individuals who are struggling. With the help of citizens who generously share time or funds, this important local charity strives to change these alarming statistics.

Food is life

Food insecurity has reached crisis levels. According to Tony O’Dell, Director of Fundraising and Communications at KSM, 40 percent of Ontario food banks have scaled back support due to record-high demand. “At Kerr Street Mission, the need is greater than ever, “ O’Dell says, “with a staggering 200% increase in families relying on our food market over the past six years. We currently serve almost 1,200 individuals per week versus 400 per week in 2019.”

KSM is committed to ensuring families have access to healthy produce and proteins through its Choose Fresh Program, and at the Kerr Street Market, where people can redeem free vouchers for nutritious food.

Summer is a time when people tend to forget about helping citizens in need, yet the need is always there. Anyone who would like to help keep shelves stocked at KSM’s Food Market is encouraged to drop off food at the mission or make a financial donation.

Mind care

Mental and emotional afflictions take a heavy toll. Youth mental health, in particular, is in crisis. “In Ontario, one in five children struggles with mental health, more than half of middle and high school students experience serious psychological distress, and one in six has considered suicide in the past year,” O’Dell says.

Next generation

As part of its commitment to child and development, Kerr Street Mission runs summer camps focused on fun, positive, developmentally appropriate activities for a very low fee. O’Dell tells of a young man who worked at one last summer. During the camp debrief, the young man said he had been at a KSM camp as a boy and always looked up to his summer counsellors, hoping to be like them one day.

“He realized that his life had come full circle. He was now one of those people for the kids at camp who would one day remember him, and maybe one day they would want to be a counsellor,” O’Dell says. “If that wasn’t enough to bring the tears, he then personally shared that he believes that Kerr Street Mission changed his life, allowed him to try new things and find new passions, and it gave him a place to belong. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room.”

KSM has added a new Mental Health & Well-Being resource that will provide critical support to struggling families via fully subsidized, third-party counselling sessions.

A guiding hand

Social supports may exist locally, but where to start? “During times of greatest need, navigating complex social support systems can be overwhelming,” O’Dell says, “especially for families and single parents.”

A new, dedicated Family Services resource at KSM will provide personalized guidance, helping families access the social supports they need to transform their lives.

The good weather is finally here, and that means soaking up every moment outdoors. As people are investing more in their at-home spaces, a landscape plan that includes purposeful outdoor lighting can make a difference.

Lighting adds both function and ambiance to your outdoor space by setting the mood for a cozy evening on the patio, adding a warm glow for dining al fresco, and ensuring safety along walkways. The first step to designing a beautifully lit space is understanding the types of lighting that will dazzle year-round.

LED leads the way

Lighting has evolved into smarter, more efficient, and customizable systems. “For anyone with an outdated halogen system, we recommend considering LED retrofits,” explains Dave Colborne from Turf Pro. “With MR16 LED lamps, you can typically get 30,000 to 40,000 hours of light, while halogen bulbs might only last around 5,000 hours, depending on the manufacturer. That means far less maintenance and fewer bulb changes.”

Devon Kleinjan from LandArt Home & Landscape agrees, emphasizing the long-term benefits. “For durability and control, low- voltage LED systems are ideal,” he says. “They offer a wide range of fixture styles, remote control options, and long-lasting bulbs, plus they can be installed without needing a licensed electrician.”

LED bulbs aren’t only about efficiency and longevity; they also align with the modern design trends this season. “We’re seeing a shift toward warm white and shielded LED lights,” says Sarah Love from PM WYRE Ltd. “Home automation systems allow homeowners to adjust the brightness levels, reducing unwanted glares at night while still keeping sidewalks and paths illuminated.”

Turn up the tech

Today’s outdoor lighting blends atmosphere with convenience. With smart technology, lighting systems can be fully automated or manually controlled with the tap of a button. “An app allows you to create a home or away schedule,” says Colborne. “Landscape lighting has become a lot more user-friendly.

“We’re seeing clients want to access their smart home without switching between multiple apps,” adds Love. “They want to be able to launch custom scenes like ‘Patio Party’ or ‘After-Hours Path’ from their keypad, touchscreen or mobile device. The convenience of a single access point mirrors what they already have in the way of technology in their home, making the indoor-outdoor experience seamless.”

Dimming has also become an indispensable tool for fine-tuning outdoor ambiance. “When I’m installing lighting on large trees, it’s typically comprised of fixtures that uplight and downlight the tree,” explains Colborne. “In the winter, it’s nice to be able to dim the downlights a bit because the reflection from the snow makes it appear brighter to the eye.” Love agrees, adding that dimming can also create distinct zones. “For example, homeowners can lower ambient lighting to 30
percent brightness after dinner while keeping the pathway lights at full brightness for safety.”

Let there be light

With creative planning, any backyard can be transformed into a welcoming retreat. “In the winter, bare branches cast striking shadows, and in the summer the light filters beautifully through foliage,” says Kleinjan. “A strategic, classic approach works across all seasons and stands the test of time.”

The key to a well-lit space is understanding the role each light plays. Love explains, “It’s crucial to define the purpose of a space before deciding where functional lights are needed for safety, like steps, locks, and grill areas, and where to add decorative lights for ambiance.” “I look at a whole composition and come up with a complete plan,” adds Colborne. “This is what produces the most dramatic effects because lighting is both an art and a science. Life is too short to have
bad lighting.”
