It’s that time of year again. When the air is crisp, the leaves begin to change, and the streets of Hamilton become lined with superheroes. That’s right, we’re talking about Comic-Con. A pop-culture phenomenon not just for comic book fans.
The founders of the first official comic book convention, held in New York City in 1964, set out to include not only the comic books they love but also other aspects of the popular arts that they enjoyed and felt deserved wider recognition, including films and science fiction/fantasy literature. The ultimate goal was to unite fan groups and allow everyone to celebrate their interests together. Since its inception, Comic-Con is now celebrated worldwide. From Russia to Australia, Japan to Africa, and even right here in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Now in its fifth year, it’s expected that over 15,000 pop-culture enthusiasts will band together in Hamilton on October 13 and 14 to immerse themselves in cosplay, retro arcade games, movies, and other Comic-Con pastimes, turning the Hamilton Convention Centre into the centre of the media universe.
With an impressive celebrity guest list, including Ryan Hurst from Sons of Anarchy, Laura Vandervoort from Smallville, and David Faustino from Married….With Children, along with appearances by Transformers’, Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee, and a retro 80’s arcade, fans will not be disappointed.
In the tradition of celebrating creativity, there will be over $1,000 in prizes for best costumes, and three floors of vendors. From insanely crafted action figures, to close ups of gorgeous movie props and costumes, to seeing all-new stories and universes for the first time, Comic-Con is flooded with the products of amazing, talented people.
Throw on your best costumes, grab your best friends, and travel through a different universe at Hamilton Comic-Con.
