Activities for the whole family

There’s no question that kids look forward to a week off school for March Break, and while it’s easy to settle into a low-key routine of relaxation, there is the risk that cabin fever will hit and soon they get bored. The good news is that you don’t have to travel abroad to make lasting memories. Just by spending some time with the kids exploring some of the city’s cultural sites and attractions, you will make everyone’s March Break!

Amusing Attractions
Hamilton is full of walkable neighbourhoods with coffee houses to break up the day and shops for browsing. The Hamilton Public Library system has something lined up for kids every day of the week at multiple locations, or bring your skates to an indoor rink for a family skate. If it’s too cold or rainy, bring them to a family friendly movie or a live performance like Disney On Ice (March 15 – 18). Another way to experience your city and learn something new is to broaden your young ones’ palates. Bring them to one of your favourite ethnic places or try a place you’ve never been. Take the opportunity to learn about a new culture and try their cuisine – there are lots of places to choose from.

Dundurn National Historic Site
Dundurn Castle and the Hamilton Military Museum will give kids an opportunity to make their own costume pieces, dress up and take photos with historic backdrops of Dundurn. As always there will be guided tours of rooms in Sir Allan MacNab’s home and at the military museum they can dress up like an 1812 soldier for more photo opportunities. Save some time for the hands-on discovery gallery too.

Hamilton Children’s Museum
The Hamilton Children’s Museum is dedicated to helping kids learn through play. Exhibit galleries feature a ship for sailing on, a dock for fishing, a galley kitchen and fort building. The museum is housed in an 1875 farmhouse in beautiful Gage Park.

Battlefield Museum
Battlefield Museum was formerly a 19th century property owned by the Gage family. During March Break, this 200 year-old home will be offering lots of hands-on activities for the whole family as well as guided tours. The museum is surrounded by 32 acres of parkland – take the kids for a walk through its nature trails.

Museum of Steam & Technology
Get the kids to swap their screens for steam! The Museum of Steam and Technology’s Unplugged March Break Activity Centre will be offering lots of fun, low-tech activities including a giant chess board, puzzles and games. Try your hand at origami, build a house of cards, and make your own puzzle to take home.

Fieldcote Museum
Bring the whole family to participate in a fun scavenger hunt in historical Ancaster locations, explore the exhibit and wander the beautiful grounds. Exciting prizes to be won! March 13 – 18.

Art Gallery of Hamilton
Inject some art into the week at the Art Gallery of Hamilton. In addition to weeklong camps at the gallery, on March 25 families can make art together during the Family Fun Day.  Artist instructors will be on hand to help create a pop-up installation inspired by the exhibitions on view.
