Nique Restaurant – Review

nique

Tucked away just off James St North is Nique restaurant, a decidedly unique space with a self-described ‘cultural mosaic’ of a menu. Walk into Nique for lunch and you’ll immediately notice the incredible amount of natural light that pours through the large windows. The bright space is welcoming, and the light does wonders to illuminate the local art scattered throughout the room. Walk into Nique for dinner, and the space feels remarkably different. The light is perfectly dim, with bare bulbs hanging from the ceiling and pink hues emanating from a fluorescent sign at the back of the room, reading ‘work hard, stay humble’.

The open kitchen is full of action, and ample bar seating provides front row views of each interesting dish being prepared. The food truly is a cultural mosaic. You could call it Canadian – as we are a country bursting with different cultures and cuisines – and the team at Nique has drawn inspiration from all over the world, producing a menu that is both approachable and adventurous, but anchored by a Canadiana feel. The menu is constantly evolving and changing, however a few favourites have become staples, notably the Sushi Nachos and the Cauliflower & Poblano Hummus (which was our feature recipe over the summer – see it here). Perhaps most notable about Nique is the fantastic atmosphere they’ve created. It feels relaxed, warm and welcoming, yet the food is executed with precision and meticulous attention to detail. It’s rounded out with an interesting bar menu, complete with local wines and spirits.
