7 Places for Gooey Grilled Cheese

National Grilled Cheese Day is April 12th. I don’t need really need a calendar to help me celebrate though. Like most kids, I grew up eating grilled cheese sandwiches (a lot). My dad would grill them up buttery and toasty and flat on our old 1970s sandwich maker.

I could eat them every day. Actually there are times where I either have two in one sitting or make them several times a week. I don’t make them fancy, but there are lots of places that do! Check out a few places in Hamilton to enjoy the ultimate gooey goodness:

Gorilla Cheese. These purveyors of fine grilled cheese sandwiches started off as a food truck but now also have a storefront in downtown Hamilton. Try the Lumberjack: some good Canadianna right there. gorillacheese.com

The Burnt Tounge. Opt for either the classic or French onion grilled cheese, paired with a kale salad or fries with a side of curry ketchup. theburnttongue.com

Earth to Table Bread Bar. Known for fantastic food the menu over (I love their pizzas) but this post is about a specific item so if there’s someone at your table that doesn’t like grilled cheese, they’ll find something tasty. breadbar.ca

Bean Bar. A sandwich described by one TripAdvisor reviewer as “grilled cheese from heaven.” We also hear that the truffle fries are a must order. beanbar.ca

Jax. Grilled cheese is good any time of day. Jax serves a breakfast version with fresh fruit. If you have room, please try one of their buter tarts. Again, butter tarts are also good any time of day (in my opinion). jaxsweetshoppe.ca

Jack & Lois. A great breakfast place which has appeared on You Gotta Eat Here, and you guessed it: they have a breakfast grilled cheese, which you can enjoy with some fresh fruit on the side. JackandLois.com

541 Eatery Exchange. The concept alone behind this place is wonderful. Those who can’t afford a meal can take a button from the jar and pay for their food. The prices here are so reasonable that one must buy several buttons to pay it forward for someone else in the community. Now onto the sandwich: menu items may change but they’ve served a mean grilled cheese with pulled pork on marble rye.  fivefortyone.ca

Detour Cafe. Besides upholding its mission to “make sure nobody ever has to drink a bad cup of coffee again” you can order the Two Cheese Grilled Cheese. Good coffee and a twice-packed cheesey sandwich? I like the way they think. detourcoffee.com
