Farmer’s markets begin opening this month, and we couldn’t be happier about it. All of those locally grown fruits and vegetables will increase in availability and supply as the season progresses. Some markets run until late September/early October, letting us stretch out the opportunity to peruse the stalls and buy from favourite vendors and try new ones, too.
Get your garden started early with large-pot perennials and hanging baskets. Spring crops including Ontario asparagus and rhubarb will be arriving and shoppers can pick up fresh Ontario-grown greenhouse tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Local Ontario honey, maple syrup, and an extensive array of baked goods, farm-fresh eggs, deli meats and cheese will also be available.
The Oakville Farmer’s Market on George Street will have traffic closed down when the market is running to allow for a true market experience. What’s great about local markets is the inventory always changes based on what’s growing seasonally. If you’re unsure how to store or prepare the fruit and vegetables, just ask the vendor, they have great tips and advice.
Visit each market’s website (see below) to keep up to date on what vendors will be available. It can also help you plan your shopping list!
Farmers’ markets are growing in popularity – it’s gratifying to see more opening up across the region. According to a recent study conducted by the Greenbelt Farmers’ Market Network, people wanting fresh produce was up 76% in 2015 (up from 63% in 2009). Plus the study found “farm vendors are also reporting that a greater share of revenues are coming from market sales and 63% of farm vendors report that markets are helping them connect more with other buyers”.
