Plus the crowning of “Best Taste” & “People’s Choice”!
Burlington restaurateurs are proud to announce “A Taste of Burlington” will be running again this summer from July 17-31, 2016. To kick things off and provide diners an opportunity to experience a taste of what to expect, the Taste of Burlington held the launch event at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre.
350 guests and media had an opportunity to meet many participating restaurateurs at their interactive food stations and try amazing cuisine. Cameron’s Brewing Co. sampled their award winning craft beers, Lakehouse Coffee House kept the crowd caffeinated with their amazing organic, fair-trade coffees and Bodhi Bar kept it healthy with their cold pressed organic juice.
In what has now become a tradition and a source of pride for our restaurants, the friendly competition between the restaurants with Chefs vying hard for the title of “Best Taste” and “People’s Choice” winner. All guests were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite restaurant based on the cuisine they were serving. The popular vote would be crowned “People’s Choice” and “Best Taste would be determined by our panel of celebrity judges. Our judges, Darrin Laidman, LeeAnne Whitehouse, & Samantha Payne (95.3 Fresh FM), and Jaclyn Colville (The Shopping Channel) sampled the fare of the 16 launch restaurants and score them based on taste, creativity and presentation. In this category the combined judge’s scores were used to determine the winner.
Comments throughout the night from attendees was that it was the best launch event ever and that it was almost impossible to choose a winner. In the end, they did need to choose.
In what can only be described as a tight race the winners were crowned. Chef Kalvin Keigher of Alloro (at the Holiday Inn – featured photo) not only secured the “People’s Choice award but also the “Best Taste” with his jalapeno infused bacon wrapped scallop served over coconut rice with a lemon aioli and mango/grilled pineapple chutney.
In the “Best Taste” category only a half point separated the top 3 with Chef Stephanie Brewster from the Greenhouse Café at the Royal Botanical Gardens securing the runner up spot (and 3rd place in for People’s Choice) with her goat cheese pannacotta with hibiscus gelee, passion fruit and pomegranate.
Just a quarter of a point away was third place winner Chef Doran Abra of Water St. Cooker with a smoked trout crustini with radish-cucumber salad and Old Bay aioli.
The third place winner in the People’s Choice category was Chef Mitchell Lamb of Stone House Restaurant with a smoked paprika marinated tiger shrimp, jalepeno and cheese curd sausage, curried mango chutney and chimichurri.
A special thanks to Live and Local Music Series for providing us with spectacular entertainment from Gillian Nicola.
