Recently I learned about a new bakery/cafe in the community through a local Burlington Facebook group. It’s a place called mmmSugar, which serves all the good goodies from pecan tarts and cupcakes to danishes and butter tarts. They do custom cakes too. If you call owner, Natasha Perera about 20 minutes before you pop in, she’ll make a fresh tuna, chicken or pickled beef melt just for you, served hot and fresh.
The decor is a mix of peaceful lines with a bit of industrial flair. There’s a sit down area next to a warm, linear fireplace and a room off to the side with toys for the kids to use while you sit and eat.
If there’s ever an opportunity for me to indulge in a butter tart, I will never say ‘no’. Although I’m sure the pecan tarts and cupcakes are equally delicious, I was happy with my choice – especially after taking the first bite. It was one of the best butter tarts I’ve had (even rivaling the Humble Pie Butter Tart Factory in Baysville, ON).
Natasha offered to serve it warm (yes, please!), which some places where I’ve had pie before seem not to want to have to bother but I definitely prefer tarts and pies on the room temperature/warm side.
The crust was thick, flaky and buttery and the filling was absolutely delicious and not too runny. It was also not overly sweet or laden with too much sugar – it made it seem like not so heavy of a dessert, which was probably a good thing since I ate it at 11am!
