HOLIDAY FASHION – Look Luxe in Festive Fashion

Written by Erin Montgomery

The holiday season is here, which means festive parties, cocktail receptions and gatherings with friends and family. So, what should you wear? Choosing an outfit can be stress-free, whether you want to look sophisticated for an office party, or wear something that exudes the holiday spirit at your neighbours’ annual get together.

Holiday fashion is all about sparkle and sophistication – think glamorous and chic. Adding a little bling to a traditional black cocktail dress will give off just the right amount of glitz. It’s pretty safe to say that cocktail dresses have become the go-to look for parties, but there are other options. This season try a dress that has a little more detailing, like sheer shelves or lace overlays. Local fashion expert Mirella Marsilio, owner of Mirella’s Ladies Boutique in Burlington, offers some great insight: “This season we’re seeing a lot of bling and sparkle. Sequins are popular for this season, as well as lace detailing,” she explains. “Having a nice sheer shelf on a plain dress allows the sheer to become the interest. Cocktail length dresses are easiest to wear, and also easy to incorporate into any wardrobe.”

Every well-dressed partygoer needs a handbag, which allows us another opportunity to incorporate a little bling into our outfit. Gold and black are the in colours this season. “I think the jewel tones are always popular, as well as light gold and cream,” says Sanela Sehic, co-founder of Black Caviar in Oakville. Look for metallic clutches in different shapes and sizes as an alternative to a handbag.

To round out the outfit, consider adding some accessories. Statement jewelry has been a big trend for fall and it’s carrying over right into the holiday season. A black dress can work as a blank canvas, allowing your jewelry to be the focal point of the outfit. Add two pieces of statement jewelry like a chunky necklace, exaggerated earrings or bangles and you’re ready to step out in style. If your dress has a lot of detailing like sequins or lace, try jewelry that has a more delicate look, like simple drop earrings, a single bracelet, or a strand of pearls. A bit of sparkle can act like a glimmer of sunlight to carry you through the winter.

Since we’re stuck bundling up under coats, scarves and hats during the winter here in Halton, dressing for the holiday season is a great time to get a little bedazzled, have fun and feel festive.
