Visit a farm or orchard this month to pick Ontario apples and pears and choose an Ontario pumpkin from the patch.
• Savour the harvest: Enjoy apples and pears for snacks, baked in pies and sliced onto salads. Choose sugar pie pumpkins for baking, which have sweet flesh that is perfect for making pumpkin breads, pies and biscuits.
• Make decorations: Carve a selection of large and small, orange and white pumpkins to create silly and scary Jack-o-Lanterns for welcoming trick-or-treaters. Light them up with LED lights, a safer alternative to candles.
• Roast the seeds: When you scoop out the insides of pumpkins for carving, separate the flesh from the seeds. Rinse seeds, pat dry, toss with oil and your favourite seasonings and roast at 325°F (160°C) for about 25 minutes for a yummy snack.
