Baby back, spare, St. Louis, country style or rib tips – whether doused in sauce or dusted with a dry rub – they’re all delicious. All ribbing aside, more than 150,000 people will descend on Burlington’s Spencer Smith Park for the famous Labour Day weekend Ribfest. This charitable event serves up a fantastic line up of mouth-watering, fall-off-the-bone ribs, live musical entertainment and activities for kids.
The National Post labelled the city’s annual festival the “Super Bowl of Ribfests”. Barbecue pits and smokers will be set up by 18 award-winning ribbers from across North America to “hog” their wares while competing for the title of Best Ribs.
Better bring along your own wet naps and a bib, because you’ll want to clean up after your meal to enjoy the entertainment, stroll the Crafts-by-the-lake Artisan Fair and watch the kids make a beeline for the kids’ zone, watch a magic show, the reptile party, puppets and other delights. There’s also a bouncy tent area for the kids to enjoy – but not on a full stomach, of course!
As a fundraising initiative, the Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore donates all proceeds from the Ribfest to local, national and international charities. In 2012 more than $330,000 was raised and over the last 17 years the event has garnered more than $2.6 million. Having also made its mark ecologically speaking, Festivals and Events Ontario has awarded the Ribfest Best Greening of a Festival for the past three years for its use of biodegradable or recyclable products and waste sorting stations. It also serves as the model for other festivals to follow.
“Canada’s Largest Ribfest celebrations have become an annual success largely impart with the immeasurable assistance from its amazing, dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers, and sponsors,” says John Thorpe, Co-Chair of the Rotary Club Burlington Lakeshore. “We’ve never been more excited for the festival. This year promises a fantastic selection of ribs and other delicious eats, fun and entertainment – all in the name of many charitable organizations. Spencer Smith Park is the place to be this Labour Day weekend.”
