In a new award competition hosted by TERRA, customers are encouraged to turn their thoughts local when it comes to summer produce
TERRA has created an award, called the Purple Pepper Award, with the focus of recognizing not only those growing exceptional gardens; but those who are growing exceptional edible gardens. There is optimism that this award of distinction will be given out annually and in turn increase the number of personal edible gardens in the area. “Our hope is for the communities to receive this award with enough enthusiasm to make it an annual award of prestige given out by TERRA,” said Bill Bown, Senior Manager, Marketing.
With five categories, this challenge has been extended to even the youngest of TERRA customers. The categories for the contest include, ‘Best Edible Garden by a Child or Children’, ‘Best Edible Garden’, ‘Most Exotic Edible Garden’, ‘Best Edible Balcony Garden’, ‘Best Edible Container Garden’ as well as ‘People’s Choice’.
TERRA believes in this initiative and is proving it by giving away more than $10,000 in contest prizes. The contest has launched across all four of their stores, located in Waterdown (Hamilton), Milton, Burlington and Vaughan and is open to all Ontario residents.
All participants have to do is upload a picture or pictures of their edible gardens under the category best describing their edible garden at www.terrapurplepepper.com. The top three gardens in each category will be chosen and notified. TERRA judges will then go out to the gardens in person to decide on first, second and third place. All entries must be in before August 1, 2013.
TERRA’s hope is they are encouraging sustainability and independence when it comes to being more environmentally open-minded. TERRA wants to promote healthy eating and wants their customers to know if they want local-grown they can grow it right in their backyard or even on their balcony.
