Father’s Day Fashion: Keeping Dad Well Clad

Article Written by Erin Montgomery

Scouring the shops for Dad this Father’s Day may actually prove a more difficult task than finding something for Mom last month. There are the predictable choices, but how many World’s Best Dad ties or screwdrivers does one man need?

It’s time to take a different approach and give Dad a hand in the area where he probably struggles the most: fashion! Help him say goodbye to oversized t-shirts with silly sayings, outdated Hawaiian prints and that Members Only jacket that’s been hanging in the closet since 1980.  Dad will undoubtedly appreciate a couple of staple items for spring and summer from local menswear shops.

Not to be mistaken for the dated flannel shirt that undoubtedly lives in Dad’s closet, checks are small, clean and colorful. And they’re showing up everywhere. “We’re seeing checks on shirts, jackets, ties and even shorts”, explains Lou Frasca from Scrivener’s in Burlington. Checks are versatile, and give you the option to dress it up or keep it casual.

Hip to be Square

When men choose sunglasses they typically gravitate to aviators, but we say it’s time to introduce Dad to something different. Square sunglasses are fully functional (Dad will like the fact that they’re practical) and stylish too. They flatter any face shape and come in a variety of colours.

“This season is all about color, and we’re seeing it throughout our whole collection”, says Lou. It may require some family encouragement if this is out of Dad’s comfort zone, but bright colours like orange, pink and light blue are what’s in right now. Visit any of our local retailers and you’ll see a variety of styles, including stripes and checks, in many different colours. Perfect for summer!

Stars in Stripes

It’s no surprise that stripes are a big hit this season. Stripes are timeless, which means they’ll never go out of style no matter how many times Dad wears them. They add instant visual appeal to any ordinary outfit, and they’re great for weekend errands or even a day at the office. From t-shirts to polos and dress shirts to shorts, stripes leave a fashionable mark on any piece of apparel.

Some people might think shopping for women is hard, but the truth is that shopping for a man is one of the hardest tasks. With your newly found fashion expertise, you too can be proud to appear in public with your sharply dressed Dad. Happy shopping, and send us pictures or tweets of your local shopping finds!
