I took my 2 daughters to Ben Thanh on Appleby Line for dinner last week – a girl’s dinner out. I ordered fresh chicken rolls with vermicelli, lettuce and mint, which came with a sweet dipping sauce. They were good, although seemed a little dry. They were filled with a lot of noodle and only a little chicken. I also really like to put a lot of mint in mine when I make them at home.
Our next course was the Beef Pho, which came with beef flank and meatballs. I’d asked for the meat to be cooked instead of rare. The meat was a little tough, but the kids seemed to eat it ok. The meatballs were really disappointing: tough and flavourless. Next time I would order the same but try the meat rare, as is on the menu and skip the meatballs – or go for the chicken version. I’ve tried authentic Vietnamese Pho many times before and Ben Thanh’s didn’t really come close but it was good enough to satisfy my craving.
