May has a special day that is near and dear to all of us: Mother’s Day. It is a day to honour our Moms for being role models for us, but in a broader sense, it is a day to honour the influence of mothers in society, including those mothers associated with the wine industry.
One of the most remarkable was Madame Clicquot, née Ponsardin, known as Veuve (“Widow” in French) Clicquot, who gave us the style of Champagne we enjoy today. Madame’s husband, who owned the Clicquot champagne house, died prematurely in 1805, leaving her to raise their 3 year old daughter. Raise her she did, becoming an iconic role model at the same time by successfully assuming her husband’s role as head of the company – a feat unheard of in the 1800s. Under her tenure, Clicquot Ponsardin became a global powerhouse.
In gratitude, let’s toast Mothers the world over for all they have done for their children and humanity, including the extraordinary Madame Clicquot.
Veuve Clicquot Brut
$73.80 (LCBO) | ★★★★ ½
If you want to impress, give Mom Madame’s sparkler! The wine is medium to full bodied and you can expect lovely mousse with breadiness, citrus, and apple. It’s wonderful with brunch, appetizers, or just by itself as an aperitif.
Henry of Pelham Cuvee Catharine Brut Rosé NV
$29.95 (LCBO) | ★★★★ ½
A medium bodied sparkling wine that delivers strawberries, raspberries, a little rhubarb, yeasty complexity, and very nice bubbles. Serve it as an aperitif and your Mom will be delighted.
Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay 2016
$19.95 (Vintages) | ★★★½
This full bodied wine has tropical fruit, an abundance of spicy oak, and some lemon notes. If Mom likes roast chicken, serve it with mango chutney for a good pairing.
Featherstone Estate Rosé 2016
$15.95 (Vintages) | ★★★½
This deep pink rosé is reminiscent of sweet apples, red cherries, and raspberries followed by a green apple finish. Make Mom grilled seafood or a lightly spiced vegetarian curry to pair with this and let her enjoy.
13th Street Gamay Noir 2016
$19.95 (Vintages) | ★★★★½
This fresh red exhibits strawberries and dark cherries with a little earthy mineral on the finish. It also has low tannins. So, if Mom prefers a lighter red, serve this one with blackened chicken or veggie pizza.
Wakefield Shiraz Clare Valley 2016
$18.95 (Vintages) | ★★★★½
The Australians used to give the full oak treatment, but this is more subdued. It’s still a full bodied wine with blackberry, raspberry, dark plum fruit, and oak spice. Anything off the BBQ would be good with this wine. Give Mom a bottle if she likes a full bodied red.
